The Skill Master!

And, what pray tell, would that be, you ask? Well, even if you don't ask, I will tell. This event is held on the first day of each (most of the time) new year in a cow pasture. 100's of people (and I am not kidding about that) gather to watch grown men bomb around lap by lap in their beater cars. It's great redneck fun! We dress warmly, bring some beers, sit in the back of the truck, watch our kids get filthy (and keep them from getting run over!) and cheer on our favorite driver. This year (and last year too) it was Charlie's son, Kevin. His Oldsmobile made it though another race, in spite of a hole in the gas tank and an hood and trunk that wouldn't stay closed.

And, he even won the race this year!

The deJong family are our hosts, and Mrs. Helia deJong now greets the winner each year. Previously, her husband Case would do the congratulating. Her husband passed away 2 years ago, so now she does the honors.

This was Kevin's car, shortly before the end of the race. He got it running and pulled out a win in the end! It was exciting, and he enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame.
