This spring we purchased a kit to watch Butterflies hatch from caterpillars. It was fascinating to watch them go through the different cycles in a matter of hours and days. In the morning, they were caterpillars, and by the afternoon they were cocoons! Lily was also doing this at school, so she really learned about life cycles!
She was sad to let them go after they emerged from their cocoons, but when she saw them fly away, she was pretty excited. We see Painted Lady Butterflies around now more often, and she likes to think that they are "her" butterflies!
