The Fish Market

We were riding our bikes on Tuesday morning and spied a sign for this market, Pearson's, which is a 5 minute bike ride from the Newport Dunes RV Resort. "Let's get some fresh fish for dinner on Wednesday," we thought. (See post from Thursday, July 17) We had no idea that this "barge" was the actual fish market until I rode over there on Wednesday afternoon. The "market" was full of salt water tanks holding shell fish and fish on ice that had been caught that day. I was like a kid in a candy store! What to buy?! What to cook?! It was a dilemma. The kid that was working convinced me to buy the sea bass, which he said I was to marinate in mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce, cook it on the BBQ and make fish tacos. What?! How ungourmet was that?! Much to my reluctance, I did it. It was amazing! We ate the fish tacos with fresh cilantro, lettuce, and salsa and between the two of us, consumed the entire pound of fish. One thing that Charlie and I love to do on vacation is eat! Usually we are vacationing close to the beach (We really aren't mountain people.), so our diet constitutes of fish. Hopefully, the mercury levels in our bodies will return to normal now that we are back at home.

For those who are interested, Pearson's Fish Market is located at the back of the parking lot/Marina/RV Storage on the corner of Bayside and Pacific Coast Highway. You can't see it on the picture, but the Pacific Coast Highway bridge crossing over the Newport Back Bay entrance is on the left. This market has been family run for two generations. Click here for a recent story about Spot Prawns and and the Pearson Family. This kind of local joint is a true find, and we can't wait to go back on our next trip to the Dunes.
